Rebuilding America
Back in the United States, things were not doing so well either. This meant that it was Truman's job to rebuild this country, but he didn't know what to do. In Germany, the Potsdam conference was being held in order to end conflicts once and for all. Truman was also trying to figure out how to transition America from a wartime economy to a consumer economy. Labor disputes were taking place in steel mills because the workers demanded a higher wage and better working conditions. Their working conditions weren't inhumane, so Truman didn't resolve that as quickly as the other situations. It was difficult to meet their needs because the war had just ended. The GI Bill of Rights was developed in order to, "provide benefits for World War II soldiers"(Hamby). President Truman wasn't just helping America after the war, but he also helped Europe with the Marshall Plan. This was an aide to them, and they received thirteen billion dollars. As the war came to an end, America was slowly coming back together.
